Tsunami Recovery Waste Management Programme
The tsunami that hit Indonesia and other countries in December 2004 was a major natural disaster that prompted an unprecedented international relief effort. International organizations in partnership with local governments forged a successful partnership not only to help the survivors, but to set forth the essential conditions for sustainable development in the framework of a market economy.
TRWMP implemented by UNDP retains a three-fold strategy: to create immediate employment and longer-term livelihoods in the waste management trade; benefit the environment through the collection, recovery and recycling of waste materials; and build the capacity of local government bodies.
In that framework, Terre des hommes Italia is managing the Waste Management Livelihoods Program – Round III aiming at boosting the recycling sector in Aceh.
